Frequently Asked Questions

What do the planting colours (green, orange, grey) mean?

Green indicates good days for planting, orange means fair conditions, and grey suggests rest or avoid planting. Tap any date for detailed notes on what to plant—kūmara, tubers, seed crops—or when to rest the soil.

When are the best nights for fishing?

Tangaroa nights (nights 23–27 of the lunar cycle) are traditionally among the best for fishing. The app shows fishing and eeling ratings for every day, with suggested jobs like fish, eel trapping, crayfish, and shellfish.

How do I set my beach for tide times?

Go to Settings and select your preferred beach from the list of 50+ NZ beaches. Tide predictions will then show high and low tides for your chosen location.

Where does the Maramataka information come from?

The gardening and fishing guidance is based on centuries of Māori knowledge, drawing from sources including Te Papa and Te Ara. Each night of the 30-night cycle has traditional names and wisdom.

Can I use Marama offline?

The Maramataka calendar, planting guide, and fishing guide work offline. Weather forecasts and tide data require an internet connection to fetch current information.

Is Marama free?

Yes. Marama is completely free with no ads and no in-app purchases. All features are included at no cost.
